On March 17th, the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame honors Gene Wolfe with the first “Fuller Award” acknowledging an outstanding lifetime contribution to literature. Join us at the Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington Hills for this one-of-a-kind event. Neil Gaiman, Michael Dirda, Luis Urrea, Michael Swanwick, Peter Straub, Jody Lynn Nye, Patrick O’Leary, and Audrey Niffenegger are just a few of the many luminaries set to pay tribute to the writer whose body of work, including the Chicago-set Free Live Free, distinguishes him as one of our city’s finest literary treasures.
Experiencing the treasures of the Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington Hills usually requires a personal invitation. The estate, nicknamed Place de la Musique, is a 44,000-square-foot private residence filled with magnificent collections of beautifully restored antique music machines, a European salon carousel, street and clock towers, steam engines, and other antiques. Following the award presentation, the audience will be treated to a staged reading of one of Gene’s short stories, adapted by Chicago writer Larry Santoro and performed by members of Terra Mysterium. The reading will be accompanied by R. Jelani Eddington, one of the world’s most accomplished pipe organists on Sanfilippo’s 80-rank, 8,000 pipe organ. After the reading, guests will be treated to a concert on the Theatre Pipe Organ.
The Owen Society for Hermetic and Spiritual Enlightenment
Professor Marius Mandragore presents The Owen Society, an association of Hermetic, Metaphysical, and Spiritualist scholars dedicated to the study of psychic and occult sciences for the general betterment of humanity. Each meeting of the society will feature a paper or presentation by one of its members, followed by questions and discussion.
Our first meeting of The Owen Society on January 29 was a great success! Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to a delightful afternoon. The first paper was "An Investigation into the Mysteries of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor" presented by Professor Marius Mandragore himself.
Enjoy some photos from the first Owen Society meeting! Attendees may feel free to share their own photos with us on the Book of Faces.
The next Society meeting is to be announced.
During meetings of The Owen Society, we enjoy brunch and other refreshments (at cost, of course) from the establishment where we gather. We hope that we will be able to meet at least every other month, and we are very much looking forward to hearing what other members would like to present – both in the academic/theoretical and experiential realms of magick and the occult.
Questions? Feel free to send aether-mail to Professor Mandragore.
